In 1920, the Jones Act was created to allow sailors (seamen) who sustained an offshore injury to obtain damages from their employers for the negligence of the ship owner, the captain or fellow members of the crew.
The Jones Act allows seamen working in the United States to bring lawsuits against vessel owners based on claims of negligence. This law was designed to operate similarly to legislation already in place for recoveries by railroad workers by extending that same legislation to sailors or seamen.
If you have been injured in any type of offshore accident, you may be entitled to recovery. Accidents can include a vessel collision, boating accident, vessel explosion, platform or rig fire. The general contractor, platform owner or company man may be found liable for these types of accidents.
Injuries can include back injuries, slip and fall injuries and burns. If you or someone you love has suffered an injury or wrongful death, you need an attorney who understands the nature of your injury and how to file a claim through the Jones Act. You should not have to suffer due to a company man error.
